A Great Start to the Season - 08/08/2018
The 1st XV entertained Frome knowing that the visitors are never the easiest to predict. Playing into what, by Sherborne standards, was a very light breeze in the first half Sherborne showed some glimpses of the good work that had gone into pre-season and, at the same time, that there was still a bit of rust that needed knocking off. As it turned out Sherborne got to the break 17-12 down to the visitors who didn't look quite the heavy unit up front that we have seen from Frome over the years and who suggested that the second half might not see them start to run out of steam. From the start of the second half Sherborne played a simple territory game. With Tom Lane back in the starting lineup, after a couple of seasons playing up a division at Salisbury, most of the ball won within 30 metres of the Sherborne line was knocked to the other end of the pitch giving Frome the task of working back against the wind. The Sherborne tactic and pressure on the Frome players with ball in hand paid off as Sherborne recorded 17 unanswered points and the bonus point try to tke the win 29-17.
Meanwhile on the 2nd XV pitch Sherborne's newly promoted second string entertained Blandford 1st XV with the visitors having suffered relegation at the end of last season. The visitors fielded a very big set of forwards and there was always the hope that if Sherborne didn't get blown away early then their speed and fitness would come into play as the game progressed. It was certainly entertaining stuff early on with both sides making, but not taking, several chances. The game was level at the break but as the Blandford side tired a little after the break, Sherborne squeezed ahead and also scored the bonus point try as they won 24-12.
Two close and entertaining games to start the season and two encouraging wins that will hopefully give players and supporters alike encouragement that the season ahead should be good for both teams.
